The toast as we know it began with a bit of toasted bread placed in the bottom of a glass when drinking to someone's health. The glass was passed from hand to hand around the table, and each person drank from it. The last one to receive the glass got the saturated toast. Thus a courteous custom came to be known as the 'toast'.
Toasting is an expression used in almost every type of celebration, from weddings to roasts, even starting a good meal, it's a universal practice. It can be as simple as a few words or an elaborate speech. Whatever the length, the toast generally includes raising the glass, saying the words and then taking a sip or on some occasions a good swig of the drink at hand.
